Obituary of Katalin Rita Eibel-Spanyi
With her loving husband at her side, Katalin passed away on November 3, 2023, at the age of 62. She fought a long and courageous battle with cancer. Katalin is survived by her husband Andrew, her mother Maria Eibel (nee Ginyovszky), her brothers Gabor Eibel and Tamas Eibel (Monika), her nieces and God-daughters Andrea Eibel, and Timea Eibel. Her father, Gyula Eibel, predeceased Katalin. She will be sadly missed by her sister-in-law Susan Masterson (Scott), her brother-in-law Peter Spanyi (Belinda) and her nieces and nephews Heather Brown (Mike), Crys Foley (Michael), Matthew Spanyi and Nicholas Spanyi and her grand nieces and nephews.
Katalin was always engaged in some form of teaching. When she was just twelve years old, she taught little children (aged 7 and 8) in a bi-weekly group education session. She earned a doctorate degree from the Corvinus University of Budapest and has taught marketing at the university level in Hungary, Canada, and the USA. Dr Katalin Eibel-Spanyi was particularly beloved by her Marketing students and colleagues in the Business Administration department at Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU). She conducted important research on Marketing and Innovation Theory. She was active in many departmental, school and university wide committees. Dr Eibel-Spanyi established and oversaw the Marketing student club (American Marketing Association Chapter), which achieved significant success at the national level for several years. She joined ECSU in 2002 and took early retirement in 2014.
She had deep faith. Katalin was active in the Catholic church in Hungary, Vernon, CT, Sarasota, FL and most recently at St. Alfreds Church in St. Catharines, Ontario. Her many activities included baptism preparation/education, bible studies co-leader, catholic book club, a member of Emmaus Sisters in Florida, participation in various retreats in North America and in Hungary, a member of various Rosary groups, and a member of Small Christian Discussions Group.
Katalin had boundless zest for life. She loved to travel. She talked to flowers and plants (and they responded). She touched so many people in loving ways. Katalin was warm and kind to all who knew her. May she rest in peace.
