Obituary of Sheila Marie Hastings
Died tragically on December 3 whilst in the care of the St. Catharines Hospital. We await details from the OCC. She was 70 years old.
Sheila enjoyed an extensive career in healthcare. She loved assisting patients, easily winning people over with her sparkle and shine. She subscribed to the “more is more” philosophy in myriad areas of her life, never meeting a heel she didn’t like, or a sale she could pass up! She treasured the thrill of the find. Her grandson, Tristan Chase, was the apple of her eye, the fizz in her Diet Pepsi, and she knew how devoted he was to his Nana. He’s been empathetic, dignified and courageous during the past 6 months and we’re in awe of his good heart. Sheila’s son and Tristan’s proud dad, Jeffrey Robert Mallysh, is heartbroken and feels the loss of his beloved mother deeply. Sheila is also survived by the men in her life - her loving brothers David, Dennis and Donald. These fine men loved their only sister, their strength and poise are unfailing and parents Mary and Gord Hastings live on in them. Life won’t be the same for Sheila’s daughter, Courtney Barnfield, or her kind, clever and compassionate granddaughter, Emma Jane. Sheila had the support of Dr. Paul Barnfield, who offered counsel through her struggles (and translated for the rest of us at times when we didn’t know which end was up.) The mid-life decision to become a dog mom saw Sheila open her heart to Calvin, her old buddy and old pal. He ignited adoration for West Highland Terriers and inspired her further involvement in their rescue and adoption. This short lady with tall tales was a wizard with french braids and plum pudding. She never missed watching Miracle on 34th St at Christmas. Sheila had dedicated and protective girlfriends who supported her unabashedly. The lady with raspberry lipstick took her leave a little too soon. It’s not easy being human. There is no such thing as normal. Vulnerability is characteristic of strength and true self-worth. Talk, listen, walk in someone else’s shoes (or heels). Encourage yourselves and others; as uncle Frank used to say, "Be seeing you".
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted with the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton St., St. Catharines. Cremation has taken place and a time of gathering will be held on Monday, December 18th 2023 from 3:00 – 5:00PM and 7:00 – 9:00PM. A safe and Merry Christmas everyone.
