Obituary of Giuseppina Burgio
It is with shattered hearts that our family announces that our beloved Giuseppina passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 21, 2024 at the St. Catharines General Hospital in her 96th year.
She fought her failing body for 3 years and beat the odds many times over several hospital stays with courage, strength and determination.
The Lord called our "bambolina" home to reunite with her beloved Paolo whom she shared her life for 62 years in marriage and with her much-adored son Salvatore (Sam - 2023).
She is survived by her son Joe (Linda) and daughter Carmela (Anthony) DiBiasi.
Pina was born in Realmonte, Sicily, Italy to Giuseppe and Vincenza Barba and immigrated to Canada in 1958.
Upon arrival, she worked several seasons at Boese Canning Factory and took early retirement from Peninsula Fittings to be a dedicated caregiver whenever she was needed to her four grandchildren Tina (Antonio), Paul (Michelle), Daniel, and Joey (Daniela). Cherished Great-Nonna of Dante, Enzo, and Camille Firenze; Paolo and Alessio Burgio.
Pina was the matriarch of the family and her legacy will be her tradition of cooking her weekly feast for her family well into her 90's; every Sunday, with an open invitation to anyone that stopped by.
Pina is survived by her sister Rosa DiMora (the late Domenico); Giovannina LoPresti (the late Tomasso); predeceased by her brother Giovanni Barba (Stella) all in Sicily and survived by sister Leonarda Valla (the late Pietro). She was predeceased by her sister Teresa Burgio (the late Pietro) and sister-in-law Maria Bonsignore (the late Giuseppe); survived by brother-in-law Giuseppe of Windsor (the late Leonarda); predeceased by brother-in-law Pasquale Burgio (the late Vincenzina) and Rosario Burgio (Antonietta) and brother-in-law Gerlando (Maria) of Sicily; survived by brother-in-law Angelo Burgio (Rosina) and brother-in-law Gaetano Burgio (Rose).
The family will receive guests at the George Darte Funeral Home, 585 Carlton Street on Wednesday, January 24 between 2-4 and 6-8 pm. Vigil prayers will be held at 3:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Alfred's Roman Catholic Church, 272 Vine St. on Thursday, January 25 at 11 am. Entombment to follow at Victoria Lawn Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke or Kidney Foundation.
The family would like to acknowledge those who cared for Pina with love, kindness, and compassion: " Mille grazie" Eleana, Rio and Ernesto.
Thank you Dr. Gruber for the special care you gave Giuseppina for 25+ years.
"Quanto ti voglio bene
Queste parole d'amore che ti sospira il mio cuore
Forse non s'usano piu
Mamma
Ma la canzone mia piu bella sei tu
Sei tu la vita
E per la vita ti lascio mai piu" RIP cara Mamma
