Obituary of Helen Tutecky
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Helen Tutecky (nee Popowich) on February 22nd 2024, in her 97th year. Helen passed peacefully at Heatherwood retirement residence. Helen was born February 20th, 1928, in Sudbury, Ontario. Helen was predeceased by her husband John Tutecky, her parents, John and Annie Popowich, her brothers Peter Popowich, Michael Popowich and William Popowich and her sisters-in-law, Carmella (Michael) and Natalie (William). She is survived by her brother Nicholas Popowich (Colene) of Kentucky, along with many nieces and nephews from both the Popowich and Tutecky families.
Helen earned a B.A. from the University of Saskatchewan, magna cum laude, as well as a master’s degree from the University of Ottawa. She then became a high school teacher in the Niagara Region, teaching history and English. Helen was a published author, and belonged to many groups and committees which she believed in. Helen was the first woman to be hired by the Vatican to serve as an executive secretary in the sacred congregation for the Eastern Churches.
In keeping with the family’s wishes, funeral arrangements have been entrusted with the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton St., St, Catharines. The family welcomes family and friends for a time of gathering on Thursday, February 29th 2024 from 2-4 and 6-8pm in the funeral home with Panachyda at 7:30pm. A Mass to be Celebrated in honour of Helen will be held at St. John Theologian Ukrainian Catholic Church Friday, March 1st at 10:00 a.m. followed by Rite of Committal at Victoria Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations to Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate Provincial Home, Salvation Army, Community Care or Hospice Niagara in memory of Helen will be appreciated by the family.
