Grandad,
As I reflect on all the memories from every chapter of my life, I think about the days when you used to pick me up from elementary school. I was a little boy, excited for school to end, just to take slapshots at you with no protection, except for a cushion in the carport. All those shots whizzing by your head as I celebrated every goal you couldn’t stop. Even that one wild shot I took which shattered the stained glass attached to your chimes. And what about the time I stood up and sang “O Canada” before every Saturday night Toronto Maple Leafs game? You and Grandmom would remind Emma and I of that every time we visited.
I cherish the moments when you brought me to all my hockey practices and games. I fondly remember you wearing your white Under Armour hat watching above in the bleachers. But you didn’t just watch hockey; you came to all my football games as well. I appreciate how proud you were of every accomplishment in our world of sports. We had such a great time golfing together, and I looked forward to every summer, playing alongside you in golf tournaments and our one-on-one matches. Thank you for purchasing the junior golf membership for a few years and for all the lessons and memories at Twenty Valley. We had a blast walking the course at Glen Abbey during the RBC PGA Canadian Open; I certainly did.
Even throughout school, you taught me everyday skills that helped me improve my grades in English class. Speaking of memories, remember when you gave us that T-shirt that read, "Let's eat Grandad. Let's eat, Grandad. Proper punctuation can save a person's life"? I still have that shirt. You encouraged me to read, learn, and apply those skills to life. I still remember when you drove us to Stratford to watch Shakespear's live play. You were so proud of my career, you loved our dog Rundle, and you welcomed my fiancée Emma into our family with open arms. She is proud to become a Dunn, because of you Grandad. I wish I had asked you sooner to be my best man. Instead, you left me with one last conversation after I fed you in the hospital. You thanked me for helping you eat, and Emma for grabbing you a warm blanket and stuck your hand out as we held it and told us you loved us. What a special final memory with you. You were such a great man to Grandmom, and as you asked, I will take care of her.
I could go on and on about the 27 years' worth of memories we shared. You were my biggest role model.
Love you, Grandad. Until we meet again.
