Obituary of Helen Brodoway
Helen Brodoway (Stasiuk)
April 9, 1931 – August 29, 2024.
Helen Brodoway passed away surrounded by love and compassionate care. She was in her 94th year. Helen was predeceased in 1968 by her beloved husband of 17 years, Wilfred Stasiuk. She was also predeceased by her husband Walter Shumsky of 17 years in 2002. Loving mother of Karen Cahill and Jo-Anne Stasiuk, and a cherished Baba to David Cahill. (Nathan Walker).
Helen was born and raised in Melfort, Sask. to Mike and Anne Brodoway (nee Kostyniuk). She was the 4th eldest of 11 children and is predeceased by her siblings Mary March, Pauline Tkachuk, Joe Brodoway, Victor Brodoway, Adam Brodoway, Grace Brodoway, Orest Brodoway and survived by Teena Wowchuk, Sylvia Craig and Adele Brodoway.
Helen’s life was about faith, family and community. Helen was an active member at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Grimsby and a founding member of St. John the Theologian Ukrainian Catholic Church in St. Catharines, where she volunteered her time in the kitchen for many years. In her later years she was a member of Christ the King Ukrainian Catholic Church in London, St. Joseph Parish in Ottawa and an active member of the Kanata Seniors Centre. She loved being involved in the daily life of her daughters and grandson. Keeping Ukrainian traditions alive in the home was important to Helen and this was particularly evident in the kitchen. She loved to cook and bake and was known for her cabbage rolls, pyrohy, borscht, pies and cookies. Helen’s generosity was felt when it came to serving food and her hospitality was extended to everyone who came into her home. In her younger years, Helen took care of the elderly, worked in a glove factory and as a practical nurse. After Wilfred’s passing, she assumed the role of running Stasiuk Construction Company for many years. Helen volunteered throughout her life, at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital, church kitchens, president of CWL, various church fundraisers, and had a soft place in her heart for the elderly wherever she lived, never having seen herself as old. She followed Canadian and American politics closely, read the paper daily, and watched the news on tv a few times a day. Helen was an avid reader, especially enjoying autobiographies. She liked to dance (polka), bowl and curl, play cards, garden, and preserve: canning - soups, jams, fruit. Helen’s humour, beautiful smile, laughter & kind heart, will be forever remembered by friends and family, including many nieces and nephews.
