Obituary of Otto Werner

With great sadness we say goodbye to Otto Werner, who passed away peacefully at his home in St. Catharines on November 7, 2024, at the age of 83.  Otto is survived by his wife Isobel, daughter Jill, son Neil, and grandchildren, Abraham, Lily and Bennett.

Otto was born in Wolschiza, Germany in 1940.  After his father passed during the war, his mother remarried.  Together they brought Otto, brother Albert, sister Edie, and sister Hanne, (all three predeceased), to Canada and settled in Port Colborne.  It was there that Otto honed his skills at organizing social events bringing together many of the young people in the area.  Otto was everybody’s friend, and for many years, would spend his time socializing with his peers or catching up with his children and siblings.

It was in Toronto where Otto met his future wife of 58 years Isobel.  The two settled in St. Catharines where they raised their children and Otto would start his business.

For six decades, Otto ran Sandham Electric Ltd., a lighting and small appliance repair shop in downtown St. Catharines.  He was very proud to serve his customers and took great pride in fixing, saving and restoring things for them.  Sandhams became the “go-to” spot annually during the Grape & Wine Festival, with Otto providing the festive social environment that he enjoyed so much and boasting of having the only “moving bar” in the Niagara Region.

Otto loved playing tennis, skiing, and traveling with his “tennis buddies” for weekends in Ellicottville, New York.  He also loved spending time with his friends and neighbors at Bugsy’s, as well as time with family.  His infectious smile and welcoming heart will be missed by many.

Arrangements have been entrusted with the George Darte Funeral Home, 585 Carlton St. in St. Catharines.  Cremation has taken place, and guests are invited for a time of gathering on Saturday, November 16th, from 1:00 – 4:00 pm at the funeral home.  Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, November 17th, at 11:00 am.
