Obituary of Janet Gillian Harris
It is with profound sadness that the family of Janet Gillian Harris announce her peaceful passing at St. Catharines Marotta Family Hospital on the morning of Saturday, January 11th, at the age of 85. Janet is survived by her loving partner of 43 years, Anthony Adams, her 3 children, Simon (Sonya) Ennever, Andrew Ennever and Joanne (Gary) Bublick and two stepsons, Simon and Saul Adams. Janet adored her 3 grandchildren Jessica, Max and Tessa, and was also a loving “Grandma” to Dakota, Manon, Mya, Aven and Seané.
Janet was the second daughter of Major Fredrick Harris and Eileen Harris (predeceased) and sister to Ann Smith (predeceased), Julie Davies (predeceased), Michael Harris, and Carol DeCent. She will also be greatly missed by her many nieces and nephews and took great delight in keeping in touch with them.
Travel and adventure was a big part of Janet’s life . She was born in 1939 in Sheerness, a town on the Isle of Sheppy, an island off the northern coast of Kent, England. In 1953, her family moved to Singapore when her father received a posting there. In 1961, Janet married Christopher Ennever in Bournemouth, England and departed by ship for Adelaide, Australia, where they spent 3 years. They returned to England, had 3 children, then the family moved to Canada in 1974, settling in St. Catharines.
Following a divorce in 1981, Janet met Anthony (Tony), and the two have happily traveled all over the world ever since. They had a home in the tiny village of L’Abistide d’Anjou, France, where they spent so many memorable times together, hosting family and friends. They also owned a canal boat in England, and thoroughly enjoyed cruising the beautiful countryside. In their 43 years together, Janet and Tony have visited countless other countries, including Spain, Portugal, Germany, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Scotland, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Ireland, Wales, Belgium and Denmark. In January of 2023, at the age of 83, Janet and Tony were fortunate enough to cruise across the Atlantic from New York to Southampton on the majestic RMS Queen Mary 2, a thrilling journey for them both. Her final trip to her home country was in April of 2024, to celebrate the 80th birthday of her brother and sister, and see her family one last time.
Although Janet was adventurous, she was a quiet, introverted woman who loved to read, often checking out several books at a time from the library. She had the most beautiful smile and a keen wit that emerged frequently, even when she was gravely ill. Although she suffered from her illness for several months, she never complained and was always full of gratitude for the care she received. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and also her grand-dog, Jasper.
The family would like to thank the medical staff and students of the Niagara Health System at the St. Catharines Marotta Family Hospital and Port Colborne Hospital sites for their care. Additionally, they are so grateful to the many PSWs of Ontario Health at Home who came to the condominium to manage Janet’s needs, allowing her to spend a little more time in her home with those she loved most.
In keeping with her wishes, Janet has been cremated. Guests are invited to attend a Celebration of Life on Sunday, January 19th, beginning at 11:00 am at the George Darte Funeral Home, 585 Carlton Street in St. Catharines, followed by a light reception on the premises. For those unable to attend due to travel, a link will be provided for live streaming of the service. If desired, donations can be made to the Lincoln County Humane Society or the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.
