My condolences to the family and friends of Robert Malcomson. I read many of his books on the War of 1812. They were very well done. I'd often go to his book signings. Robert was very good to his book reading audience. He would sign his books with a unique inscription like "Remember Brock", "Remember Yeo", etc. He was very knowledgeable, and witty too. Wish he was still here. He was a great author. He is missed. "Remember Robert" I say.

I have looked and looked for someone who wrote about the battle at Pultneyville, N.Y. and found reference to that today in Lords of the Lake!
I grew up in Pultneyville in a house built in 1808, right on the lakefront. When I was a young child I remember my folks found a cannon ball from the War of 1812 in the attic as well as a Colt naval pistol. According to Colt the pistol was made in 1864 for the Navy and that of course was well after the War however it had wooden grips and there were three notches on one side so it was kind of eerie to look at. I'm not sure what happened to the cannon ball but it may well be in the little Pultneyville, Museum as there is plenty of old relics there.
I congratulate Robert for doing the research as extensively as he did for his writing.

Today my wife and I my took my oldest son to school for the first day of grade 6. Years and years, and miles and miles away from where my parents took me to school for the first day of grade 6, at Richmond St elementary school in Thorold.
My son was nervous, so I shared with him stories about the best year I had in school...grade 6.
Mr Malcomson, or Mr “M” was my teacher, he was an amazing teacher, an inspirational teacher, a funny teacher...I will never forget the way he brought out the best of his students.
It prompted me to search his name and I’m saddened to see that he passed away 10 years ago.
My condolences to his family and close friends, and all those students who were lucky to have Bob Malcomson as their teacher.

I was researching topics for my podcast, specifically, an episode on amazing teachers and I googled Mr. Malcolmson to see if I could contact him to be on our show. I did not know his first name, but as soon as I saw this photo I was taken back. Mr. Malcolmson was the best teacher I ever had and although I only spent a few months under him he made such a huge impact on me. Very saddened to hear about his passing. He taught us the whole song list to Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and to this day I have not forgotten it. He would share his lunch with me because I was poor and often didn't have any food. He will be remembered as the best teacher of all my teachers throughout my entire school career.

I was very saddened to hear of Mr. M's passing. I was lucky enough to spend grades 5 and 6 with him at Richmond St. and he has had an influence in my life which is undeniable.
Mr. M was always positive and cheerful and energetic. He made school so much fun. He loved to tell us about the writing he was doing, the hockey he was playing and his life in general. There were so many dimensions to him, from getting us involved in young authors conferences to the annual science fair, his unbeatable history lessons.. He was using computers and video in the classroom long before it became "easy" to do so, yet never complained. He was an environmental trail blazer and single handedly started the recycling program at Richmond St. He was definitely an exceptional teacher. I can only hope to have any where near the influence on students in my career that he had in his.
He was also responsible for turning my brother David into "Dave"
Mr. M you were an amazing role model and friend. May you rest in peace.
Love,
Paul Darling

My sincere condolences to the Malcomson family. In our youth Bob and I were neighbours and spent many happy times together. I particularly recall playing endless hours of road hockey with Bob, and wish to let you know that he loved playing goal way back in elementary school. He often fashioned himself to be Johnny Bauer, his favourite Maple Leaf.
My thoughts are with you.

Dear Janet and Family,
I want to express my sincere condolences to all of you during this very difficult time. I have just returned from being away out of the country and was very sad to hear about Bob's death. Janet, Bob was so very kind to me when I first started my LRT teaching position at Richmond St. School. I will always remain grateful to him for his support during those first challenging months. Last week, in Italy I lit a candle for Bob at a small town called St. Margerita. Thinking of all of you, Janet. Take care.

To the Malcomson Family:
I wish to express my heartfelt sympathy for your loss. I had the opportunity to work with Bob at Richmond St School. He was a unique and gifted educator. He touched so many young minds and lives in such a positive manner. It was a privilege to watch him work his "magic." He was "one of a kind." Nobody could read a story quite like Bob. The story would come to life.
He will not be forgotten.
My thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

My condolences to the entire Malcomson family.
The world seemed a little darker today as a bright inspiring light left us. Mr. Malcomson will always remain the most ispiring, touching and amazing teacher that I have ever had the honour of being taught by.
He had a way of making the classroom such a fun place. My fondest memory is waiting the entire day just to hear him read from The Cricket In Time Square. He inspired so much into each of his students and I know that he will keep living on into each one of the people that he taught.
You were something very special Mr. Malcomson and thank you for everything you taught me, especially the lessons that went beyond the classroom.

Carol has kept me aware of Bob's health challenges but this is a real shock to me. I have not had a long chat with her for some time but the last report sounded pretty positive and it was my impression that he was on the road to recovery.
I do not get a paper on a daily basis so I apologize for not being at the wake. When I was reading this at 9:30 this morning, I was too late.
Be assured that you are all in our prayers as you struggle to make sense of this untimely loss.
Sincerely,

My prayers and condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Malcomson. May you find peace in your memories & strength in knowing that His passing is felt deeply by many. Although I have not seen or spoken with him for many years, I speak often of him to my children. Mr. Malcomson was an amazing teacher. He opened our eyes & ears to the world. To be in grade 6, late 1970's with Mr. Malcomson as our teacher, how could we not learn to love learning. We had weekly afternoon "rap sessions" about what ever was on our minds. It mattered to him. We had a true to life trial-it was a lot of work but we learned and we were engaged in real life, forming our opinions and ideals that would make us who we are today. We sang all kinds of music accompanied by him and his guitar. We played ball hockey in the gym - and we played hard. Our families remember him fondly because of how he positively affected us. Thank you Mr. Malcomson. This world will miss you, but your influence will live on in our hearts. God Bless.

Mr. Malcomson was my very favourite teacher. He was my homeroom in grade 7 at Richmond St. He was always making us laugh, and having us explore our talents, encouraging us to take part in many musical things that year (one being a video made to a fellow student who was ill, and the other was our time capsule which I think is probably still buried in the garden at Richmond St School.) He had an amazing ability to make you believe in yourself, even when it felt like the whole world was against you. He was taken much too soon, and he will be missed. My deepest sympathies to all his family and friends.

My heartfelt condolences to the entire Malcomson family
I have a lot of memories of the great man students at Richmond Street, knew as Mr. M. From the man who took time out of his lunchbreak when I was in Grade 3 to share information about Isaac Brock for a presentation I had. To the man who when I was in Grade 7 and 8 kept a class of students enthralled with the topic of history. Mr. Malcomson had a style of teaching which was distinctly his own, and always had him ranking right at the top of students favourite teachers list. It was also because of Mr. Malcomson, I was able to spend two very rewarding summers volunteering at Fort George; he saw that I had a keen interest in history and went out of his way to allow me to get a better understanding of it.
Mr. Malcomson was a great many things to a great many people, to me he was not only an educator, he was also, more importantly someone who I viewed as a friend.
Our world is a little bit poorer now without you, but we as a collective are all much richer from our time spent with you. Mr M. you'll be greatly missed.
