Obituary of Robert George Malcomson
With great sadness, we announce the sudden passing of Robert Malcomson, age 60, at St. Catharines General Hospital (SCGH) on July 21, 2009 after an indefatigable 17 month battle with a brain tumor. He leaves behind his beloved wife and soulmate, Janet (Lucin), and his loving and devoted daughters Carrie (Geoff) and Melanie (Andrew). For his granddaughters, Holly and Sarah, he remained the center of their world and will forever be their "Bookie". Forever remembered by his mother Jennie (Alfred, 1980), brother Tom (Peg) and sister Irene (Bob) Downey, son-in-law to Catherine and Anthony Lucin, brother-in-law to Carole (Jim) Price, Doug (Karen) Lucin, Margie (Les) Mitro, Ken (Candace) Lucin, and Mary (Terry) White. Bob was uncle to several nephews and a niece, and respected colleague and friend to many. Bob was a dedicated teacher with Niagara South School Board and the DSBN for 34 years, retiring in 2002. He touched the lives of many students and fellow teachers and was able to instill a love of reading, writing and Canadian history in all who spent time with him. He was also an internationally recognized writer and independent scholar on the War of 1812. He published hundreds of articles in journals, magazines and newspapers in Canada, the U.S. and Britain, as well as publishing 8 books on Canadian history. In May 2009, he won the John Lyman Book Award for Canadian Naval and Maritime History for his latest book, Capital In Flames. Bob loved music, and enjoyed traveling, playing goalie with his recreational hockey league, and cheering on his Toronto Maple Leafs. Bob's sense of humour and wit engaged all who met him and remained with him to the end. The family would like to thank Dr. Hirte, Dr. Craigie and nurse Jane at Juravinski Cancer Centre, Dr. Garland and the nurses on the Palliative Care ward at the SCGH and Jan from Para-Med. Family and friends will be received at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 585 Carlton St. on Thursday July 23, 2009 from 6-9 p.m. and on Friday July 24, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Celebration of Robert's life will be held on Saturday July 25, 2009 in the chapel at 9:30 a.m. with interment to follow at Victoria Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Juravinski Cancer Centre and Special Collections at Brock University Library would be appreciated by the family.
