My dear Hatcher family,
I will remember Jim most of all through the legacy he left behind. Seeing you all sit around a table full of love, made me realize that he played a part in that. The Hatcher's you are today are a result of the love, the caring, the hurt, the disappointments; the sum of all the parts of your lives together. It has made you strong, it has made you dedicated, it has made you forgiving,it has made you determined to carry on a legacy of strength of family,it has made you the true definition of loving family.Jim was proud of all you are; and no doubt would be proud of how his tragic death has again brought out the best in all of you.
I love you all so much.
(Aunt) Joyce

My wife and I send our sincere condolences to the family. I was just informed of Jim's passing and find it so difficult to accept. I met Jim in the 60's with C.S.L. I always found him to be a real gentleman and a good friend. We have all lost one of the best and we will miss him.

Capt Hatcher to me was the "coolest" pilot period.
As an apprentice pilot,he treated me with so much
respect that i wanted to do everything for him.He allowed me to make mistakes so i could learn from
them.He made sure i was in safe waters.May God bless his soul.He was the perfect gentleman and a great colleague.Seniority in the pilotage did not
mean much to him.He treated me and all others like his equals. He will be greatly missed.

Jim was my mentor, as I am the newest arrival to the pilotage. When I told him of an incident involving minor damage to a vessel he could read the concern and said don't sweat the small stuff and pointed out Hatcher's hatch to me. At Bridge one there lie's Jims indelebile mark for all pilots to see. With great humility he showed me were years before he miscalculated a swing and clipped the bridge and left for all time a " Hatch mark" on the bridge.Hatcher's hatch mark will be my point of reference in remebering a terrific pilot in my new career. Great skill, great attitude, and greatly missed.

We share in the loss of Jim. We will always remember him from his daily trips to Canadian Tire and him saying "Did you buy last weeks special?" He always told us of the tool he bought because it was on sale and he never used. We remember him as competent in his work with a quick wit, always talking about Ramea.

Thank you to all for your love and support in the loss of my Dad. It's important for us to remember the good things and the goofy stories he always told, so please leave a little memory if you have one to share.
I will miss the most his ridiculous, jiggly laughs, his "Whas'-'cadet-'bye's", his always helping hands, his knowledge in everything big and small, and his desire to keep his family and friends fed and well-protected. Heaven forbid I should ever burn toast, because I have more fire alarms in our little house, from him, than anyone could ever need.
The Jim I would like us to remember is happy and strong, who always loved a tasteless joke and a good sale. The Jim who loved to go to Newfoundland to "get his moose" and spend time with family and friends. The Jim that could steer a boat safely with vast knowledge, and just a few words, who could fix anything and would not hesitate to do so.
Thank you, Dad, for the time we shared together. We love you and will miss you very much.
