Obituary of Mykola Kocijowskyj

KOCIJOWSKYJ, Mykola (Nick) -Passed away suddenly on Saturday, November 8th, 2014 at his residence at the age of 86. Beloved husband of the late Stefania. Cherished father of Jerry (Barbara) and Bohdan (Annette). Loving Grandpa (Dido) of Sonia (Omari) Spence, Eugenie Kowal, Riley and Lily Spence, Joanna, Ryan, Carson, Chase, Jasper and Tristan. He will be sadly missed by his Goddaughter Steffie Gainor and her children David and Katherine. He is survived by his sister Hania Halchak and his sister in law Olya Dembicky, both of Ukraine. Born July 3, 1928 in the Ternopil Oblast of Western Ukraine, he survived World War Two eventually settling in England in 1946. There, Mykola started working with the Ukrainian Youth Association and other diaspora organizations and married Stefania in 1949. Mykola emigrated to Sudbury, Ontario in 1952 where he worked at INCO for 35 years, retired in 1986 and moved to St. Catharines in 1991. Throughout his life, his passion was being involved in the Ukrainian community, the Catholic Church, the Ukrainian Youth Association, Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Black Sea Hall and the Ukrainian Youth Camp in Hagar, Ontario. Mykola loved to keep up to date on politics and events in Ukraine. He was a very loving family man who will be missed by all who knew him. Saturday Night Hockey will now never be the same. The family will receive visitors at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 585 Carlton Street, St. Catharines on Thursday, November 13th from 2-4p.m. & 6-8p.m. Panachyda will take place on Thursday at 6:30p.m. in the funeral home. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at Sts. Cyril & Methodius Ukrainian Church on Friday at 10:30a.m.Rite of Committal at Victoria Lawn Cemetery to follow. Memorial donations to Sts. Cyril & Methodius Church Building Fund, the Canadian Diabetes Association or Friends of Ukraine Defence Forces Fund would be appreciated by the family.
