Obituary of Angus M.H. Verge
VERGE, Angus Murray Houghton
August 28, 1919- April 17, 2015
Angus was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, the second of the three sons of Harold and Margaret Verge. His formative years were spent in Louth Township where he attended Woodland School, moving on to St. Catharines Collegiate and college in Texas. He enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces at the time of World War ll and achieved the rank of Captain after his training at RMC at Sandhurst in England. Following the war he began his employment at Atlas Steel as a management trainee, during which time he met “his bride” Connie, to whom he was happily married for 62 years. In 1953 he decided that a career change was necessary. Wanting to be in charge of his own future he and Harry Groom started Groom and Verge Insurance Agency, later changing the name to Verge Insurance when he was joined in business by his younger brother Bill. Angus was very active in the community. He served on the Board of CAA Niagara for many years, was a member of the St. Catharines Tennis Club where he pursued his love of tennis until 3 years ago and was a long time member (lifetime status) and former president of the St. Catharines Club. Angus’ secret to his longevity was his devotion to remaining fit. He was a fierce competitor in tennis as well as an avid fisherman and downhill skier. In addition to spending great family time at their cottage, he and Connie enjoyed some memorable trips to Scotland, where he indulged his love of fishing, and to New Zealand where he was introduced to pavlova which became his all-time favourite dessert. Angus was predeceased by his much loved wife Connie (2014) and leaves his dear son Howard and his wife Cathy as well as granddaughters Michelle and Nicole. Angus was also predeceased by sons Robert and Harold. He will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by his many family members in both Ontario and the west, and by his friends that he leaves behind. In accordance with Angus’ wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 24, 2015 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 585 Carlton Street, St. Catharines. A service celebrating his life will take place at Silver Spire United Church, 366 St. Paul Street, St. Catharines on Saturday, April 25, 2015 commencing at 11 a.m., followed by a reception at The St Catharines Club, 77 Ontario St, St. Catharines. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to the United Way, Hospice Niagara or the St. Catharines General Hospital, NHS.
