Dr. Rose taught me English lit, and so much more - how to be an excellent teacher, how to do your best in a challenging male-dominated department, how to think. I wish I could have told her how influential she was in my life. Thank you Dr. Rose for your inspiration and kindness.

Dr. Rose was of my favourite, most memorable professors at Brock (1995). Her comments on assignments were so carefully considered and thorough, and her seminars were always on point and engaging. A lovely, wonderful professor and human being. My condolences to the family. Dr. Rose: thank you for the memories.

Although it is going on 2 years since Professor Rose passed, I have only just today learned this sad news. And I am very saddened to learn it! Professor Rose made an indelible mark on my soul during my years as an undergraduate at Brock in the early '90s. And she definitely inspired my love of Can Lit and Canadian fiction. There has not been a year that goes by since 1995 that a memory of Professor Rose hasn't been elicited for me through a mention of some literary figure in popular culture. She will forever be synonymous to everything & anything literary for me.
Please accept my deepest condolences and know the profound impact your mother/grandmother has had on me.

I knew your mum/sister when I worked at St. Thomas HS in Pointe Claire Quebec in the early 70's. We actually taught a grade 10 class together. She had a huge impact on my life by instilling in me confidence born of her respect for my teaching abilities. My heart hurts just thinking of her passing.
My husband was transferred to Calgary in '76; I would write to her and she would correct my grammar:) There was no such thing as a casual letter to Marilyn.
I visited her once in St Catharines when I was visiting my family in Oakville. It was just after adopting you, Jill, and she was so happy!
Over time we lost touch and when I tried to reconnect, suffice it to say the picture and information I found did not seem to be the same person. Life got crazy as we also went through the adoption process and I never searched again.
Then my next-door neighbour, who teaches Economics at Brock, posts the Brock press release on Facebook. I delve further and confirm it is she. I am devastated that I was never able to tell her how I felt. I remember her love of antiques, that she wrote for a competitor of Coles Notes; little memory bites that just pop up. She was a very, very special lady and it was a huge privilege to have known her.
My deepest condolences,
Joanne Heizler

From the 1980s, Marilyn and I shared parallel careers in Canadian Studies, Canadian Literature, and then as Deans of Graduate Studies in our respective universities. Her contribution to all three fields was inestimable, informed always by her scholarship, compassion, dedication to students, and wonderful sense of humour. She had a great capacity for friendship. I extend my sympathy to her family in this time of sudden and terrible loss.

My respect and affection for Marilyn began when she started to teach her Children's Literature course at Brock, an innovation she completed with style and rigour. She was a wonderful colleague and an insightful, sensitive and diligent scholar and teacher. I was later delighted to hear she had invested herself in administration at Brock, with the same seriousness and effectiveness. My warmest condolences to her family, friends and colleagues, whose loss all who knew Marilyn -- wherever they now are -- deeply share.

It seemed to us, knowing Marilyn mostly by way of family stories, that the eldest Russell sister was cherished terra firma within the clan. Her academic and career accomplishments were proud claims to what an intelligent, hard-working, and insightful woman could achieve; a beacon for others. Yet the stories that truly informed our view of Marilyn were love stories - for her dear husband, their children and grandchildren, and for her siblings. Deepest condolences to Lori, our cherished friend, and your family in this difficult time when losing two loved ones in such short a time seems more than one can be expected to bear. One can only imagine Marilyn and Barry once again convening over the joy and wonders of their family.
