Hi
I am looking to come to Canada for the first time in January 2019
I just had a thought I would try and look up the funny exchange primary school teacher I had in Canberra Australia in 1978.
It is a shame David has passed on - i was on of the class he always referred to as Stares Turkey Farm....

We would like to extend our condolences to Dave's entire family. He will be greatly missed. Joan thinks of Dave every time she looks at the pretty 'elephant' themed wall unit that he made for her many years ago for her Copenhagen Christmas Plates. As one ex-servicemen to another, Bravo Zulu (well done) Dave! May the road rise up to meet you and the wind be at your back as you begin your new journey.

Sending my deepest sympathy to the Stares family. I am saddened to hear of the passing of your father and husband. I was lucky enough to have Mr. Stares as my homeroom teacher and for science at Scottlea (1975 - 1977). He was a wonderful teacher and truly very kind. He encouraged and respected his students and we respected him in return. You could tell he loved his job as teaching came very natural to him. I remember seeing him about five years ago and reminded him of who I was and we had a little chat. He left me with great memories of Scottlea as well as of my Grade 7 teacher. Sending healing prayers to you.

My sincere heartfelt sympathy to the Stares Family. I am a former student of Mr. Stares from Scottlea School (1975-77) . He was such a wonderful teacher and always such a nice nice guy! I have a VERY SPECIAL memory of your Dad to share with you. When I had him for homeroom 7D he taught us and had us all recite a little night time prayer at the end of each day. When I had 2 girls of my own I used that little prayer EVERY night when putting them to bed. They both know that prayer off by heart and I'm sure they too will pass it down to their children one day. A little legacy passed down by your Dad without him ever realizing he did that. May you find strength in the coming days from special memories like this and to know that he made a difference in so MANY peoples lives. Sincerely Linda Proske-Slamka and Family

With Sympathy to the family of Mr. Stares. I had Mr. Stares as a teacher while at Scottlea Public School and the lessons he taught made so many changes in my life. He taught us to look at things in life in so many different lights and it was a skill I have taken with me throughout many decisions I have made in my lifetime. He was a wonderful mentor and will be truly missed.

Mr. Stares was my homeroom teacher in Grade 7 at Scottlea Public School. I want his family to know, even though I never got a chance to tell him personally, that he was a gift to his students. He made sure I knew I was capable of success and instilled a strong sense of accountability for my actions that has served me well ever since.
I want you to know he is one of the few teachers I remember from that time period and have thought of him often - and thanked him mentally for being a great teacher and wonderful mentor. My sympathies on your loss. I will remember him always.

The best teacher I ever had - loved grade 7 and the awesome learning experiences he gave us (2 of my favourites - raising money for a Canadian ship and then we got to ride it up the Welland canal lock system, Christmas caroling one evening all around the neighbourhoods of Scotlea - learning wasn't restricted to the classroom - the hallmark of an amazing teacher). RIP Mr. Stares.

So sorry to hear of Mr Stares passing. He was one of my teachers at Scottlea back in 1973. I work at a Walk In Clinic, and his daughter brought him in recently, and we had a nice chat. My prayers go out the the family at this difficult time.

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Stares passing. He was my grade seven teacher at Scottlea over thirty years ago and one of the reasons I became a teacher! I think of him often as I deal with my own class of grade seven students! I wish I could throw chalk like he did. :)
You always knew where you stood with Mr. Stares. He was firm, yet kind. He had a job to do, but he could be extremely funny at the same time.
He was a gifted teacher and I am thankful to have been one of his students.
My condolences and prayers are with the family at this time.
