My condolences to all the Huibers and de Laat's.
Uncle Joe was very special to me. The earliest memory I have of uncle Joe was on a sailboat. I assume it was his, and maybe he came to Kingston or Ottawa with it (not sure if that happened but that's what I remember). I remember this really cool, adventurous uncle, meeting us on this sailboat. He must have been an amazing sailing instructor and inspirational role model because his children ended up being amazing sailors (notable mention Larry Huibers). I know he was so proud of his family and loved them dearly
Uncle Joe treated me like I was someone really special to him and he was special to me. He always greeted me with a big smile and a huge hug. We would always chat every time we were together and he would always be interested in what I was up to. His presence was grand and warming and made every gathering complete. I remember spending great times with him at his really cool house, at family functions, and much more.
Uncle Joe, I will miss you very much and our family won't be the same without you. Love, your nephew Derek (Drikske)

My sincere condolences to the Huibers family. Mr. Joe Huibers was an extremely strong supporter of Catholic education. His dedication and determination were demonstrated most effectively when he led 1600 students on a protest march to our local MPP's office to secure a new school for our overcrowded Holy Cross Secondary School. His support assisted the Holy Cross community in securing the site on Linwell Road.
Joe was a fine man and I know he will be truly missed by all who knew him!
God bless the Huibers family at this time of sadness!

Dear Elli,
Donna and I are so sad for you, and for you Ron, Larry, Yvonne and Greg. Others have already said what a giant of a man your Dad was and we’ll sorely miss him. I know people say he’s in a better place, that he died peacefully and that he didn’t suffer - all true, and we’re thankful for that, but I’m sure it will be a blow to you nonetheless.
As I said in an email to the family a few days ago, Joe really was a model for all of us in so many ways. He was energetic, engaging, adventurous, charismatic and ambitious - and so intensely proud of his family. Not only was he a proud Huibers, he was an equally proud de Laat - and a proud Canadian to the core.
I was fortunate to have spent several summers vacationing with Joe, Joanne and the kids when I was a teen. And what an adventure it always was. Joe would take us diving from the highest cliff at the lake, walk us through lumber mills on rickety boards with wood planks whirring by, go on long hikes and tour mica mines. I think that’s partly where I got my own sense of adventure. He would have been very interested to hear about the cross-country road trip Donna and I just made to visit with Shannon and Mike in LA.
Sorry we can’t be there with you on Thursday. We are in Naples, FL for Donna’s uncle’s funeral and unfortunately can’t get to Niagara in time to join you in paying our respects to Joe. We’ll be with you in spirit though and know there will be tons of memories to share. We look forward to seeing you all again soon.
Love, Bill and Donna

Very sad to hear of cousin Joe's passing. His positive outlook on life and ability to smile through life's adversities is truly an example to all of us. We will miss Joe's company, his smile and pleasant conversation at our family functions. Our thoughts are with you Elli and the Huibers family in this time of sorrow.

Dear Larry & Ann and Huibers family,
Our deepest condolences for the loss of your dear Dad Joe, whom I had the pleasure of knowing and being with at St. Edward School in Jordan. Our families enjoyed the history of those early years building and growing together that community. May you find peace and strength through your faith in God.
Sincerest sympathy,
Sue & Tom Reese and Mary Kukovica & family

My sincere sympathy to Elli and the Huibers family with the passing of Joe after a long battle. Ron(Jenny), Larry(Ann), Yvonne, Greg and kids and Elli,
Thinking about all of you during this difficult time...I sure loved my uncle Joe...i was always greeted with a smile and hug and had some good chats with him..loved that i could call him uncle instead of Mr. Huibers if he came by the school years ago(stealing this from Gary). He was such a stand up guy...i still remember him singing at the bonfire for my parents 25th years ago. I will miss him so much. The three of us will miss him. Hugs to all of you and we will be keeping you in our prayers during this time!

To Elli and the whole Huibers family,
My sincerest condolences to all of you. Joe's battle is over, but he left a big empty spot in your family circle. I and many friends will miss him very much.
I had the privilege of being a neighbour to the Huibers and always enjoyed Joe's friendship and his friendly nature.
May God give you the support to carry on.
