Obituary of Alicia Blancaflor Cortes-MacDonald
Passed away to be with the Lord at NHS – St. Catharines on Tuesday, May 14th 2024. Devoted wife of the late Ian “Nick” MacDonald. Beloved sister of Sr. Mary Aurelie, SPC, Santiago (Sonia) and Didi (Abel). Step-mother to Tim (Lorraine), Neil (Paula) and Casey (Krissie). Predeceased by parents Aurelio and Fortunata Cortes and step-son Dean MacDonald.
Alicia was born and raised in the Philippines. She graduated from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1960. She qualified for the USA Exchange Visitors Program in Medical Technology in 1963; was certified with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) and worked in the USA until 1966.
Alicia immigrated to Canada in 1967 and worked in the Laboratory of the St. Catharines General Hospital until she retired in 1996. In retirement she met Nick, a kind and loving gentleman, and they married in 1996. They were devoted to prayer and faith, both active members of the Cathedral of St. Catherine. Alicia was a Lector in many services and was a member of the CWL and volunteered at Out of The Cold and the Cathedral office for many years.
They enjoyed many trips to Europe, Holy Land, Mexico, all over USA and Canada. They joined bus tours to the theater, concerts and sporting events with friends. They kept busy with 5 pin bowling in the winter and lawn bowling at Glenridge Lawn Bowling Club in the summers.
Alicia will be remembered for her quiet spirit, fierce independence and generosity by family, nieces, nephews and friends.
The family will receive visitors at George Darte Funeral Home, 585 Carlton Street, St. Catharines, on Tuesday, May 21st from 2 pm – 7 pm with vigil prayers at 3 pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 22nd at 11 am at St. Alfred Church, 272 Vine Str., St. Catharines. Cremation to follow and a private interment at a later date. Memorial donations to Out of The Cold would be appreciated by the family.
